Jaguar Landrover visit

On Monday 16 and Friday 20 January, 88 GCSE and A-Level Business and Product Design students had the opportunity to visit Jaguar Land Rover in Solihull to learn about the business and visit different areas of the 300-acre site including the press-shop, body-in-white assembly and the final assembly line.

It was interesting to learn about the range of cars currently produced in Solihull and to which markets they target e.g. the Land Rover Evoque is primarily targeted at the American market with their SV Autobiography line targeted at the wealthy Chinese market.

All students had the opportunity to learn about lean manufacturing that JLR adopt across all their sites as well as their seven key areas of waste reduction (SWIMTOO): Scrap/Defects, Inventory, Motion, Transportation, Over-production, Over-processing.

To consolidate our understanding of lean manufacturing as well as develop teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills, students completed a series of activities where they had to build a series of trolleys, with each round seeing their lead time reduced - adding stress to the situation which often tested their resilience.

Many thanks to all students and staff who attended both days, the experience will certainly be used effectively in lessons over the next term.
