Huish Sixth

Students' success in Engineering Challenge

During the month of October and November, Design & Technology teams from Huish Academy have attended the Fleet Air Arm Museum to complete against other schools in a mechanical and electrical engineering challenge.

The students had the opportunity to go into the museum and research some existing aircraft with the support of staff from the Fleet Air Arm Museum. BAE systems sponsored this event and sent some engineers to support, encourage and judge the students.

Each team consisted of six members, with each person having a specific role. Teams were judged throughout the day on things like team work, problem solving and perseverance. All teams had to produce detailed presentations and present them in front of engineers. As always, Huish students excelled in these events.

The breakdown of results is impressive:

Year 8 Teams – Finished 1st and 4th out of 8 teams
Year 9 Teams – Finished 1st and 3rd out of 12 teams
Year 10 Teams – Finished 1st and 2nd out of 17 teams
Year 12 Team – Finished 6th out of 12 teams *although it should be noted that the Year 12 students identified a mistake with the engineering challenge set and decided to correct it, unfortunately they were not rewarded for taking such a risk.

BAE Systems employees also spoke the students about careers in STEM related areas and showed students an interesting video about engineering. This video can viewed at:
